Over the summer there have been some changes to the Counseling Department Staff that we would like to share with you. In addition to bringing on two new members to the counseling team, we are fortunate to be adding another counselor to our team this school year, bringing the Counseling Department to a total of 4 counselors! We are excited and proud to welcome Mr. Caston Conner, Mr. Mendez, and Mrs. Miller as the newest members to the Counseling Department Team.

As a reminder, most students are assigned to counselors by the first letter of their last name.

HOW TO CONTACT YOUR COUNSELOR

Prior to contacting a counselor please refer to the FAQ document under resources that will answer questions related to scheduling and class placements.

Parents:

1) Call Student Services at (916) 686-5210 or complete a Parent Request Form

2) Send an e-mail request

3) Schedule an appointment

* Please note that we are here to help and will do our best to respond to your requests in a timely manner. In order to meet everyone's requests, we are not always able to accommodate drop ins.

Students:

1) Stop by Student Services window before or after school, during your lunch, or morning break between 2nd and 3rd periods.

2) Complete a Counselor Request Form available in the Student Services Office

3) Obtain a written pass from an authorized staff member.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELOR?

The counseling department is an essential component of the overall school program at Katherine Albiani Middle School. Our school counselors work to build positive partnerships with the KAMS staff, administrators, families, and the community to provide a supportive, effective and safe environment in which all students can succeed and feel connected. Students and families are encouraged to contact the Student Services Office to set up an appointment if they would like to meet with a member of the counseling staff.

The KAMS counseling program provides guidance and support in 3 core areas;

Academic:class placements, schedules, resources for tutoring, transcript reviews , and learning how to track and calculate credits for successful promotion to the next grade level.
Personal/Social: providing tips and guidance around forming and maintaining positive peer relationships, learning to self advocate, make a positive transition to middle school, and managing changing emotions. In addition, counselors provide support to students who are having challenges with peers through the use of a conflict mediation process.
College & Career Exploration: in class workshops with students to help them begin to identify their college and career goals and host a Career Day with community members in the Springtime.

STUDENTS WHO DO WELL IN SCHOOL:

Set academic and personal goals for school.
Expect to be successful.
Like learning new information, even if it is difficult at first.
Persevere; they are ready to try again, even if they don’t do well on something the first time.
Stay on task in class and finish assignments on time.
Have academic confidence and take pride in their work.
Want to take academic risks and challenge themselves.
