Carlton, William
Course Description:
Honors Science-8 will challenge students at a higher level by offering the following units: Force and Motion; Atomic Theory; Kinetic Molecular Theory; Chemical Energy Transformations; Physical Changes and Chemical Reactions; Geologic Process; Weather; and Astronomy.  A unit in Drug Education is included as part of the honors science curriculum.  Successful completion of this course will allow a student to take Biology as a ninth grader.
I. “Successful completion” is defined as receiving a “C” or better for all grading terms/semesters.

II. If a student receives a “C” or better for all terms/semesters, the student:

i. may take Biology as a 9th grader

ii. will be expected to take Chemistry, Physics, and Integrated Math III, or an equivalent math course, in high school

iii. must have successfully completed Math I..

III. A grade of “D” or below for any term/semester will not allow a student to take Biology as a high school freshman.  A student who receives a “D” or below will take General Science as a ninth grader to fulfill the graduation requirement.

IV. On rare occasions, the Honors Science-8 teacher may recommend a student who does not meet the criteria above for 9th grade Biology.  Exceptions to the practice must be initiated by the Honors Science-8 teacher or site administrator. The teacher must provide a rationale to the middle school principal for review and approval.  Documentation must accompany the request.

V. 9th grade Biology students must also pass Chemistry and Physics in high school to fulfill their science agreement. If a student does not fulfill the Chemistry and Physics requirements, they must enroll in General Science.

VI. High school credits will not be given for the successful completion of this 8th grade Honors Science class.
